Why the US consulate can't help
US consulates and embassies don't perform or officiate weddings, in Spain or anywhere else. That surprises a lot of American couples researching a Spain wedding, so we say it upfront: your consulate's role is limited to notarising documents, not marrying you.
The route most couples take
Get your marriage license and hold the legal ceremony at home, before or after your trip. Then fly to Spain for the real celebration: vows, first dance, the whole day, exactly as you pictured it, just without the residency requirement Spain places on civil weddings held here.
If you'd rather marry legally in Spain
A Catholic church wedding is legal in Spain with no residency requirement, a route several of our couples from Ireland and Italy choose too. The paperwork (prenuptial file, marriage prep course, banns) runs about 2 months with the diocese, so start that conversation early if it's the path you want.
American traditions, on Spanish soil
The first dance: Choreographed or not, your first dance as a married couple opens the floor, exactly like at home, just with a Spanish sunset behind you. The sparkler exit: Your send-off, lit up: we coordinate the sparklers and the timing with your photographer so the shot actually happens. Rehearsal dinner the night before: An intimate dinner with your closest people the evening before the wedding, a US staple we build into the itinerary as standard. A bourbon bar next to the Spanish open bar: Your open bar, American-accented: a dedicated bourbon or whiskey station alongside the local wines and cava. Jamón carved live, sobremesa included: And the Spanish side of the day: jamón carved to order for your guests, and a long, unhurried sobremesa after the meal.

Yes. A marriage legally performed in the United States is recognised in Spain and across the EU, no extra paperwork needed for the wedding itself. If you ever need it recorded for Spanish residency or other procedures later, that is a separate registration step, unrelated to your celebration.
