Why most Dutch couples marry at home first
Civil marriage in Spain is reserved for legal residents, so if neither of you lives here, the Spanish registry office is not an option. Registering the marriage through your own gemeente in the Netherlands, instead, keeps the legal side simple and familiar.
How the Dutch civil registration works
You give notice of your intended marriage ("melding voorgenomen huwelijk") to your municipality, then the ceremony itself can be as short as a brief registry appointment. Most couples arrange this in the weeks before or after their Spain trip, without it affecting the wedding day itself.
If you would rather marry legally in Spain
A Catholic church wedding is legal in Spain with no residency requirement, a route some of our Dutch and Irish couples both choose. The diocese paperwork usually runs about 2 months, so let us know early if this is the path you want.
