The legal marriage itself is usually simpler to arrange at home: Spain reserves civil marriage for residents, so most German couples complete the paperwork through their local Standesamt before or after the trip, then travel to Spain purely for the wedding day.

Why most German couples marry at home first
Civil marriage in Spain is reserved for legal residents, so if neither of you lives here, the Spanish registry office is not an option. Registering the marriage through your own Standesamt in Germany instead keeps the legal side simple and familiar.
The Ehefähigkeitszeugnis, and why timing matters
Your Standesamt will generally ask for an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (certificate of capacity to marry), typically valid for a limited window of a few months from issue, plus apostilled and, where needed, translated civil-status documents. Because validity windows and exact requirements can vary by Standesamt, we recommend confirming the current rules with your local registry office as early as possible so nothing expires before your date.
If you would rather marry legally in Spain
A Catholic church wedding is legal in Spain with no residency requirement, a route some of our Dutch and Irish couples also choose. The diocese paperwork usually runs about 2 months, so let us know early if this is the path you want.

Sawing the log together: The couple saws through a log together right after the ceremony, a hands-on test of teamwork that always gets guests cheering: we bring the log, saw and trestle to your venue. Hochzeitssuppe to open the meal: A traditional wedding soup served as the first course, a warm, familiar touch from home before the Spanish menu takes over. Do we need to register our Spanish celebration back in Germany?
If you marry legally through your Standesamt at home, that registration is your legal marriage and needs no further step in Germany. If you choose the church-wedding route instead, we walk you through what your diocese and Standesamt each require so both sides recognise the marriage.
What about our families flying in from Germany?

Can we include German traditions in the celebration?
